It shoots high voltage spark, and ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture.
It becomes oxidized by high temperature, and its ignition area will gradually wear out and round off. Then the clearance between spark electrodes will become larger causing spark dischange to diminish. Also, the ignition area will be gradually dusted with carbon and affect engine starting.

When left unrepload, ignition becomes unstable and leads to bad acceleration and poor fuel economy.
When becomes worse, the engine will stall and unable to start.
